Page rank or more positively “pagerank” can be a profound mystery to many of us but why and how do we attain it? Not every website has pagerank but why? And why should it be written as “pagerank” and not “page rank”?
Well, let’s look at the last poser first. It’s called “Pagerank” not because it has to do with your web pages but because the concept was invented by a man named Page. Actually, Lawrence Edward Page, born in Lansing, Michigan in 1973 and who just happens to be one of the co-founders of Google.
Right, now let’s look at the second question, working back through the first paragraph. Working backwards is alright. We’ll get to the point, eventually. The brief answer, though one we shall be discussing at length in a later article in this series, is that they haven’t done enough to deserve it.
Right, let’s go back to the first question. Why do you need it? A lot of clever people will tell you that it doesn’t really matter and that’s true for the less competitive keywords and phrases. However, if you’re working in a highly contested area, it is of more importance and that will also be discussed in a later article.
The most important thing really is how to achieve a high pagerank on a scale of 1 – 10, where ten is virtually impossible. Hence the title of a new book on the subject Page Rank 5 in 90 Days penned by an up and coming guru named Danny Whitehouse. A pagerank of five is reckoned to be a good achievement for the average webmaster.
Whitehouse has “been there done that” and his account of how he did it fills an exhaustive 210 or so pages. He has a pleasant, style of writing that makes you feel like you’re right alongside him chatting on the journey through to pagerank 5.
Every possible method of traffic generation, designed to provide the minimum number of visitors to be able to even think about achieving PR5 is considered. You just have to realise that if it isn’t in this book, then it doesn’t work, so don’t bother with it. And it isn’t only about the number of visitors either.
Whitehouse is a great builder of Twitter “apps” and a lot of his strategies revolve around Twitter as a hub but there’s much more. He also loves the “Bum Marketing” strategies and gives good advice on them too.
“Page Rank 5 in 90 Days” is an extremely good read and refreshingly different in approach.
